What is IAQ and why is it important?

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, particularly as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. As humans spend a significant portion of their time indoors, IAQ has a profound impact on various aspects of our lives.

Why is IAQ important?

Poor IAQ can lead to health problems, productivity decrease, less comfort and non-compliance.

Health: Poor IAQ can lead to a variety of health problems, including respiratory illnesses, headaches, eye irritation, fatigue, and even chronic diseases like asthma and heart disease. Pollutants such as dust, mold, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and carbon monoxide can all contribute to poor IAQ.

Productivity: Studies have shown that poor IAQ can negatively impact worker productivity and performance. This is likely due to the discomfort and cognitive impairments caused by pollutants in the air.

Comfort: Good IAQ is essential for creating a comfortable and inviting environment for building occupants. This is especially important in schools, workplaces, and healthcare facilities, where people spend extended periods of time.

Compliance: Buildings are often required to meet specific IAQ standards set by government agencies or health organizations. Failing to meet these standards can result in fines and penalties.

To improve IAQ, identify and address pollution sources, increase ventilation, control temperature and humidity, maintain buildings properly, monitor IAQ levels, and educate occupants. By prioritizing clean air indoors, we create healthier, more comfortable, and productive spaces for everyone.
